Have you been inspired to "save the bees" but you're unsure of where to begin? Do you want to build habitats so that the different species in places you love can persist for generations? Do you just like wildflowers and want to see butterflies outside your window? These are all valid reasons to plant seeds that are native to your location!
The number-one reason bees, other insects, and bird populations have plummeted over the last 20 years is habitat-loss. What gives me hope is that we can rebuild habitats and accelerate the natural habitat restoration processes.
Studies have shown that even small patches of native plants can serve as an "oasis" for tired and hungry insects (yes, they get worn-out too!). This means that even small patches on your city apartment balcony, or leaving your lawn unmowed can allow for pollinators, like bees, to flourish.
This is the first step you and I are taking to lead expansive conservation-motivated actions and I would be SO happy to have your support early on!
The most important rule to follow: only plant the seeds in the location specified on the package.
Only planting in the designated areas avoids the HIGHLY undesired repercussions of introducing non-native and invasive species to our already damaged ecosystems. It also allows for the most efficient growth of habitat for at-risk pollinators like bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, moths and many others!
To plant, you can
(1) just throw them outside or
(2) give them a controlled environment to germinate in by mixing the seeds in a bowl with a cup-full of moist sand or dirt covered with a plate in the refigrator for about five weeks.
You can also (3) scatter them in the summer or fall, in which case, they will sprout next spring!
